Earshed Kids

Coming to iPad

Hear it. Sing it. Sign it. Play it.

Earshed Kids teaches children aged 6 to 12 to play the piano by ear, the way musicians learn songs: by listening first. A calm iPad app that listens to your child play your own piano. You don't need to read music to help.

  • No ads
  • No streaks or timers
  • Listening happens on the iPad
  • Works with your piano or keyboard
  • Buy the Songbook once and keep it

How a song goes

  1. Hear itA short tune, sung at a child's pitch.
  2. Sing itYour child sings it back in solfège: so, mi, la.
  3. Sign itA hand sign for each note, if they like.
  4. Play itThey find it on the keys while the app listens. Stuck? A hint, one small step at a time.

Then they play it again starting somewhere new. The syllables stay the same, so one song learned is one song they can play anywhere. That's movable do, and it's what the whole app is built on. How it works

Why by ear

Children learn to talk long before they read, and music teachers in the Kodály tradition start the same way: sound first, symbols later. Studies of young players link playing by ear with stronger improvising, memory and sight-reading, and we know of no evidence that starting by ear holds reading back. Reading comes in, after the ear. The method, and what the research does and doesn't say

For the grown-up who isn't musical

You don't need to be. Every song comes with a short note for you: what to listen for, what to say, what to let go. Your part is to be there and be interested, which matters more than knowing the notes.

Progress without pressure

There's no schedule to fall behind on. The course is a list of things you can watch your child do — "Can they echo so–mi?", "Can they play Hot Cross Buns in two keys?" — and the app ticks them off from what it hears, with the reason written down. Missing a week is fine. The list waits.

One iPad, the whole family

Brothers and sisters can share the iPad. Each child picks their own picture, gets their own path at their own pace, and is never compared with anyone else. For families
